Judo & Jiu-Jitsu Uniforms

Judo Uniforms

When you are looking to buy a Judo uniform, you need to keep in mind that it includes three different parts:

1: The Jacket:

When you are looking at the jacket, you need to know that it can either be a single weave or a double weave. The double weave is more durable. Judo training involves a lot of pulling and grabbing so you want to ensure that you buy a durable Judo uniform.

In fact, if you already practice another martial art such as karate or taekwondo, you need to know that while the uniforms look similar the Judo uniform is constructed differently. The reason is that the style of training in Taekwondo or karate does not include the gripping and grabbing actions used in judo, so the uniform is constructed differently. In judo, you may need to grab an opponent’s uniform as you carry out a throw so the uniform is reinforced at specific gripping points such as the shoulders, sleeves, and chest to cope with training wear and tear. The collar of a judo uniform is also much thicker, this helps the grip-based techniques.

2: The Pants:

The pants need to match the jacket and they should include drawstrings at the waist on each side. This way, you can easily loosen or tighten the waistband. You will also notice that there should be extra padding sewn in your knees area to add to the durability of the pants.

3: The Belt:

The belt should display the color that indicates your rank. One of the things that you need to know about the belt is that it needs to have between 15 to 20 cm drop after it’s tied.

Jiu-Jitsu Uniforms

When you are looking to start Jiu-Jitsu, you will notice that the Jiu-Jitsu uniform is very similar to the Judo uniform. During regular training sessions, you could wear either for either sport but if you’re considering competitions you will need the correct uniform. Both sports have specific requirements about the cut, weight, and length of the uniform. You may be lucky and get away with it but it is best to be on the safe side.

The uniform is made in several weaves. The single weave is the cheapest, then Gold weave, Pearl weave, and the strongest which is Double weave and the most expensive. The main differences that you notice immediately about the look of the uniforms are that the Jiu-Jitsu uniform is cut to be a tighter fit and has narrower and shorter sleeves and a shorter skirt.

The jacket and pants are made of heavy cotton, the drawstring trousers should be reinforced. Tying it all together is the belt which also shows your rank.

If you are an experienced jiu-jitsu practitioner and interested in international championships, you should be aware that your jiu-jitsu uniform needs to be blue, black, or white. Unlike BJJ, the rules around the color of your Jiu-Jitsu uniform colors need to be strictly adhered to.
