“Enclothed cognition” is a term introduced by psychologists Adam and Galinsky (2012) in their study on clothes having a systematic influence on the psychological processes of the wearer. In their experiments they found that clothes provide a symbolic meaning as well as a physical experience, which together increases performance. Therefore, wearing an attire that is suitable for a given task, increases the performance of that task.
Wearing the correct Gi improves performance
If you have just joined a martial arts class, then wearing a lightweight 8oz cotton white gi can motivate you immensely.
If you have enrolled for an ITF Taekwon-Do class, then you should go for an 8oz Cotton V-neck gi which has ITF logo in front and “Taekwon-Do” print on the back.
Wearing a gi with the suitable weight, while practicing martial arts increases your dedication and this results in your throwing powerful punches and blazing fast kicks. As you progress and receive higher colored belts, you can go along with 12oz, 14oz, and 16oz gi.
Wearing a high quality black belt
After months of arduous training, finally you are successfully graded as a black belt. It certainly feels great and shows that you have come a long way. Now is the perfect time to buy a belt that is not only wide, but is also made from premium cotton.
Black belts wear a heavier gi
A black belt also needs a heavier gi, because a black belt needs to practice still more than ever. In an intense workout, the gi needs to absorb sweat more effectively and hence an 18oz canvas gi is ideal. A heavier gi also provides a joyful physical experience of wearing a gi meant for black belts. This symbolic and physical experience of wearing the correct gi will make you more dedicated and you will strive towards attaining greater dans.
Wear a tracksuit to further improve performance
And while going to or coming from your martial arts class, you can wear a tracksuit, so that you remain in an athletic state of mind. A tracksuit symbolically shows that you are an athlete and the physical experience of wearing it, can help you mentally focus on your training even while you are traveling to and from your class.
Clothes influence performance
Enclothed cognition is all about wearing the appropriate clothing. If a doctor wears a white coat then the doctor performs more effectively, and simply by seeing the white coat, the patients immediately place their trust on the doctor. Similarly, a martial artist wearing a gi becomes more focused, more sincere, and more devoted, as clothes have an impact on cognition and performance. This is the reason why different occupations have different dress codes. At Pacific Sports, we understand this and we provide our customers with the best quality of sportswear, which can improve their dedication and performance in sports. If your sport needs compression wear, then you can wear a compression top or a compression pant. Martial artists can wear compression top and pants under the gi.
