How to adjust a gi for a Karate Kata

For a Kata, the Karate gi needs to look good and feel good, which in turn, generally makes the execution of the Kata also good. The gi may be adjusted as given in the following steps:

Step 1. Wear the gi as it is normally worn.

Step 2. With the left hand, hold the knot in front of the belt and raise your right hand vertically upwards towards the sky, keeping the elbow straight. This will make the right side of the gi come out slightly from the belt.

Step 3. Repeat the same on the other side. With the right hand, hold the knot in front of the belt and raise your left hand vertically upwards towards the sky, keeping the elbow straight. This will make the left side of the gi come out slightly from the belt.

Step 4. With both hands hold the knot in front of the belt and bend down forward. This will make the gi come out slightly from the belt from the back side.

Step 5. Repeat the same on the other side. Place both hands on the back of the waist on the belt and bend backwards. This will make the gi come out slightly from the belt from the front side.

That’s it! Now the gi looks absolutely professional for a superb Karate Kata performance. These adjustments work best on a professional gi that has the right fabric, the right fit, and the right colour.

16oz Canvas – White Gi

The right fabric

A heavy 100% canvas, startched gi is best for a performance of a Kata, as it stays in place and looks professional. The fabric comes in various weights from 8oz to 160z. The weights depend on the weave of the fabric.

14oz Canvas – White Gi

The right fit

The gi should fit perfectly. It should not be too loose, otherwise it can become unadjusted during the movement. It should also not be too tight, otherwise it can restrict easy movement. It should fit just right, so that neither does it become unadjusted nor become restrictive. A fitting gi always provides full range of motion easily and comfortably.

8oz Poly/Cotton – White Karate Gi

The right colour

Generally, white is the preferred colour. However, black, blue or red may also be worn depending upon the approval of the martial arts school or competition rules.
