Types of kickboxing competition
Generally, kickboxing competitions are of four types:
-Demonstrative competition
-Semi-contact (points) competition
-Semi-contact (continuous) competition
-Full-contact competition
In all types of kickboxing competitions, any part above the waist and kicks to the side of the legs are usually allowed. Boot-to-boot leg sweeps, and punches and kicks are allowed. However, elbows and knees, grappling and clinch fighting, and a direct side kick to the front of the legs are generally prohibited.
Demonstrative competition
Here, the purpose is to exhibit kicks, punches, and other forms of kickboxing techniques. The demonstration is judged by a panel of experts. Points are awarded for the exhibited techniques, and the winner is the kickboxer who scores the maximum number of points.
Semi-contact (points) competition
Here, the purpose is to gain points by performing kicking and punching techniques that makes contact with the opponent. Every time a point is scored the match is briefly paused and then again resumed. Points may vary with different organizations; however, generally, the points system is as follows:
-any type of punch: 1 point
-kick to the body: 2 points
-kick to the head: 3 points
-a jumping kick to the head: 5 points
Strikes should be controlled and clean without much power. The purpose is to make little contact and not to hurt the opponent. If the jury decides that the techniques were employed to hurt the opponent, then the kickboxer may either lose points or be disqualified from competing.
The kickboxer who scores the maximum points is declared as the winner. If both have same points and it is a draw, then usually an extra round is given. If again, there is a draw, then another round is given, wherein whoever successfully delivers the first strike is declared as the winner.
Semi-contact (continuous) competition
Here, the format is similar to semi-contact (point) competition, with the exception that the match is not halted after every strike, rather it is continuous. The fight continues for the full duration, which is normally of three to ten rounds, each having a time limit of 2 minutes, with 1-minute rest in between. The winner is the one with the maximum points at the end of the fight.
Full-contact competition
Here, the format is similar to semi-contact (continuous) competition, with the exception that blows are delivered with full force and knockouts are frequent. The winner is the one who remains standing and is not knocked out, or the one with the maximum number of points.
