Wearing your old gi, you went through intense training, improved your skill levels, and attained higher belts. It has seen your feeble punches turn into boards-breaking powerful punches, and your slow kicks into lightning-fast kicks. So, naturally there is a sentimental value attached with your old gi and you don’t want to simply throw it away. But for your competition, or you have earned a higher belt, or simply because the gi is torn, you need to have a new gi. You can always buy a high-quality new gi from Pacific Sports, but what to do with the old gi? Here are some possible suggestions.
Wear the old gi at home
—The old gi can be worn for practicing your martial art at home. If there are some torn areas, then they can be patched up and the gi can be worn for practicing. At home, usually it doesn’t matter, if the gi is patched up.
—Many practitioners of grappling arts like Judo and Jiu-Jitsu use a dummy to practice throws, chokes, joint locks, etc. The dummy can be made to wear the old gi. This would lend a somewhat realistic feeling to the practice, especially when grabbing the collars or the sleeves, to perform different throws.
—The pyjama of the gi provides a full range of motion and is perfect to wear for lounging at home.
—The pyjama of the gi is also perfect as a sleepwear, since the fabric has already softened and is most comfortable. The gi jacket coupled with old Muay Thai or Kickboxing shorts can also be used as sleepwear.
—The jacket of the gi can be worn over a t-shirt and tied with a belt to function as an improvised housecoat.
Wear the old gi as fashionwear
Any existing clothes wear can be coupled creatively with an old gi to make you a leader of style and stay on the cutting edge of fashion.
—Instead of a regular leather belt, the belt of the old gi can be looped around the waist of a jeans pant as a fashion statement.
—The gi belt can also be worn over a t-shirt as a fashionwear.
—Wearing a formal suit but replacing the formal pants with the old gi pyjamas, can demonstrate your avant-garde looks.
—Similarly, wearing an old gi jacket as a shirt and the gi belt as a necktie, over formal trousers and shoes, can be an exciting experiment to show your unique fashionable taste.
Use the old gi at the gym
—The jacket of the old gi can be wrapped around the TRX handles or on a V-bar, so that the sleeves of the gi can be gripped, to perform pulldowns.
—Similarly, handles of any gym equipment like a pull-up bar or a kettlebell can be wrapped with the old jacket, so that a good grip can be obtained.
—A gi belt can be used as a strap to help in stretching exercises. Gi belts can also make excellent Yoga straps to practice different Yoga poses.
Recycle the old gi creatively
An old gi has a lot of fabric be it poly-cotton, cotton or canvas.
—That fabric can be recycled creatively to make purses or shopping bags.
—The fabric can even be cut into squares or any other shape to make a patched up and an attractive hand-stitched quilt.
—The fabric can be used in many other different, creative and imaginative ways. There are innumerabale crafts showing how a piece of fabric can be used for decoration or functional purposes.
Exchange the old gi for a new gi
Sometimes, sellers of gi offer an exchange scheme, where the old gi can be exchanged for some discount in the price of a new gi.
