A gi comes in three main cuts, namely Japanese, Kata, or European. All of them are a gi having an uwagi (jacket), a shitabaki (pants), and an obi (belt). The cuts are differentiated by the jacket and the pants, while the belt is the same for all the cuts.

Main cuts of a gi
–Japanese cut. The sleeves of the jacket are shorter. The lapels of the jacket are longer. The trouser length is shorter. This cut is widely used in Japan.
–Kata cut. This cut is rare and is generally custom-made. It is specifically designed for kata demonstrations usually for competitions. The jacket has a shorter sleeve than the Japanese cut, but the fabric is canvas and is heavy, generally 16oz or 18oz. The pants are same as the Japanese cut. A kata cut gi is fully starched so that it remains stiff during the kata performances. After wearing a kata cut gi, it has to be adjusted in a specific way.
–European cut. The sleeves of the jacket are longer and the lengths of the pants are also longer; however, the lapels of the jacket are shorter.
All the above cuts are extremely functional, and the differences are largely due to their respective aesthetic appeal. Generally, outside Japan the European cut is the preferred cut for a gi, and it is used extensively in all European countries, as well as in many other parts of the world.
