Muay Thai, Kickboxing and MMA, are all performed in shorts, which logically means that they can be interchanged. Due to certain differentiations, usually Muay Thai shorts are worn only for Muay Thai; Kickboxing shorts are worn only for Kickboxing; and MMA shorts are worn only for MMA. Nonetheless, they can be used interchangeably, and Muay Thai shorts can be worn in Kickboxing or MMA, depending upon personal preference and style.

Differentiating features
Muay Thai, Kickboxing, and MMA shorts are all extremely functional. All of them offer full range of motion, are comfortable, and are available in attractive colours. The difference between the shorts is in terms of fit, cut, fabric, and design.
Fit
—Muay Thai shorts are loose fitting with ample room for free leg movements.
—Kickboxing and MMA shorts are medium to loose fitting, and they also provide enough room for smooth leg movements.
—MMA shorts can also be tight fitting like compression shorts and fit almost like a second skin.
Cut
—Muay Thai shorts are cut well above the knees. They also have a cut on the sides. These side splits side enable higher knee strikes.
—Kickboxing are cut in mid-length above the knees. They usually have side splits so that high kicks can be performed with ease.
—MMA shorts are cut a little above the knees. They do not have side splits, but since they are tight fitting, they offer full range of motion.
Fabric
—Muay Thai shorts are made from satin, silk, polyester, or a blend of these materials. Polyester gives it a long durability, while satin or silk gives it a glossy shine.
—Kickboxing shorts are made from 100% polyester, or a blend of polyester and satin/silk.
—MMA shorts are made from Lycra or spandex blended with polyester or nylon. They can be similar to compression shorts. Polyester or nylon gives the required strength to the fabric, while Lycra or spandex makes it extremely stretchable.
Design
—Muay Thai shorts feature bright and bold colours, usually with Thai lettering.
—Kickboxing and MMA shorts feature different shades of one or more colours in geometric patterns.
—MMA shorts if worn like a compression wear, generally feature only solid colours.
